Mabel Gonzalez, born in Tupambaé (Uruguay). Singer and actress finished her acting drama studies in 1964, in the “Teatro del Pueblo” school in Montevideo; working afterwards in innumerable theatreworks as well as musicals in Uruguay, Italy, Holland, France, England, Sweeden, Switzerland, Belgium and Spain.
In 1972 she got the golden medal (first price) in the “Festivale Internazionale del folklore” in Ceriale (Italy), singing a South American folk repertoire.
Before devoting herself to the music of her country, she also performed other musical styles as salsa, music from Africa (Congo) and old traditional Spanish songs.
In 1980 she gave the world premiere of a poem of Federico Garcia Lorca “Y despues”, with music of de modern Duch composer Louis Andriessen and accompanied by the orquestre “De Volharding” in Amsterdam.
In 1987 she definitely chose for the music of the “Rio de la Plata”: the Tango.
And she sang in many radio and TV programmes: AVRO, NOS, VPRO, KRO, VARA and NPS.
In 1995 the Argentinian tango poet and president of the “National Academy of Tango”, Horacio Ferrer, named her “Academica del Tango”.
In 1996 she sang in the festival “The Third Worldtop of the Tango” in Montevideo, Uruguay and in 1998 in “The Fourth Worldtop of the Tango” in Lisboa, Portugal.
In february 2000 she presented her CD “La noche del Rio de la Plata” .
One of the first Super-Audio CD’s in Europe; on the Challenge Records label.
Radio Nederland Wereldomroep has distributed this CD to more than 1.000 radiostations all over world, as part of the project “World Music in the Netherlands”.
In november 2000 this CD was choosen by WDR (West Deutsche Rundfunk) as the “CD of the week”.
At this moment a German production company makes a long documentary about the Tango, ordered by the German (ARD, ZDF), Swiss and Austrian public TV-broadcasting companies; the music in this documentary will be from the CD “La noche del Rio de la Plata”.
Her last cd Contame Una Historia was in september 2005 nominated for an Edison.
